How to spot a scam call

Scam callers change their stories, but the warning signs are very similar.
Warning signs
- Pressure and urgency: you must act now or something bad will happen.
- Requests for codes: a real bank or service does not ask for your one-time passcode or PIN.
- Unusual payment: gift cards, crypto or wire transfers.
- Remote access: being asked to install an app or let someone control your device.
- Unexpected prizes or refunds that need a fee or your bank details first.
- Big names: callers claiming to be a bank, courier, government office or tech support.
Caller ID can be faked
A number that looks local or official can be spoofed. Do not trust a call just because of the number shown.
What to do
Hang up and contact the organisation yourself, using the number on its official website or the back of your card. Then search the number to see if it has been reported.
