Phone country codes explained

A country code is the number after the plus sign that tells the network which country a phone number belongs to.
Common examples
- +1: United States, Canada and several Caribbean countries
- +44: United Kingdom
- +91: India
- +61: Australia
- +49: Germany
- +81: Japan
Why it matters
Before calling back an unfamiliar number, check the country code. A missed call from a country you have no link to is a reason for caution. Call costs to some destinations can be high.
A code is not proof of location
Internet calling and number spoofing mean the code does not always show where the caller really is. Use it as one clue among several.
